Every other year the Friends of Historic Kingston organization stages a re-enactment of British Army troops, under the command of General John Vaughn, burning the City of Kingston in October 1777. This includes an amphibious troop landing and marching into the town, with much musket and canon fire in the city. The DAR Wiltwyck Chapter, NSDAR holds an open house with light refreshments and tours for visitors given by Daughters of the American Revolution members in period costumes.
The Wiltwyck Chapter, NSDAR hosts many interesting programs that have included speakers on Native American Indians, a presentation on Historic French Huguenot Street in New Paltz, memories of a WWII Army Veteran Edward S. Davis, a program called “Coopering” The History and Art of Barrel making.
Each year the Wiltwyck Chapter, NSDAR sponsors a Good Citizen high school essay contest. The submitted essays are judged by 2 to 3 non-member judges. The DAR Good Citizen Medal and Certificate, along with a monetary gift are awarded to the local Essay Contest winner at an annual George Washington tea. Additionally Wiltwyck Chapter annually sponsors two scholarships for high school seniors to Ulster County Community College, one for a boy and one for a girl.
