After the revolution.
Within the stockade area and adjacent to our chapter house is the historic Ulster County Courthouse. It is the longest continuously operating courthouse in the United States of America. In 1828 Sojourner Truth who was an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist, sued to free her son from slavery. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.
She was strong, self taught, outspoken, determined, supported children’s education, and was patriotic about individual freedom. |
